Charlie Puth is currently facing backlash from fans after appearing to confirm that his hit song ‘Attention’ was about Selena Gomez. Ever since the song’s release in 2017, fans have speculated that the lyrics were about Selena, and the music video was filmed in the same location as Selena’s ‘Hands to Myself’ video. Charlie had previously discussed the song with Billboard, revealing that it was about a relationship that “messed” him up, in which someone he loved “wanted the attention of somebody else.”
Following Charlie’s comments, fans attributed the song to Selena and assumed that it was about Charlie wanting to be with Selena, but Selena wanting to be with Justin Bieber at the time. However, a source close to Selena told People that Charlie and Selena “never dated.”
Now, Charlie seems to have confirmed that ‘Attention’ was indeed about Selena, leading to backlash for some of his old comments. In a now-deleted tweet from this week (Mar 25), Charlie wrote: “Attention is about what you think it’s about,” which led fans to resurface a Genius video in which Charlie made problematic remarks about the girl who inspired the song. In the video, Charlie revealed that the girl in question had repeatedly invited him to stay over, but nothing would happen, and he felt she was trying to manipulate him into never leaving her. Fans have criticized Charlie for his comments, saying they are misogynistic and disrespectful towards women.
