Joseph Dituri, a biomedical engineering professor at the University of South Florida, is currently living 30 feet below the surface in a 100-square-foot habitat at Jules’ Undersea Lodge in Key Largo. He is conducting a 100-day research project aimed at examining the long-term effects of exposure to extreme pressure on the human body. Dituri, a former U.S. Navy saturation diving officer, hopes to break the record for the longest time spent underwater, which is currently 73 days. He is being monitored by medical personnel, including a psychologist and psychiatrist, to ensure his well-being during the prolonged period of isolation.
In addition to his research, Dituri is also engaging in STEM outreach by fielding questions from teachers and students about his experience underwater. He is also testing an artificial intelligence tool designed to screen the body for illness and select appropriate treatments.
If you’re interested in exploring the underwater environment, Jules’ Undersea Lodge offers overnight accommodations for certified scuba divers at a cost of $1,687.50 per couple. And if you’re a musician with a “nerd-gene” and “nerding drumming technique,” the Denmark-based band AquaSonic is seeking a new drummer for their “submerged musical performances.”
