Netflix has ignited a firestorm of anger from subscribers across the world with its new policies aimed at limiting account sharing. The Weekly Planet, an Australia-based podcast, is leading the charge against the streaming giant, calling the move “outdated” and “oblivious” to the current streaming market.

“Netflix isn’t good enough for this,” exclaimed co-host James Clement. “They should take a lesson from Blockbuster, the company they killed, and learn about outdated practices.”

The new rules, which were posted on January 31, require subscribers to jump through complicated hoops if they want to stream Netflix outside of their household. The company initially claimed that the restrictions were only for a handful of Latin American countries, but since then, similar guidelines have been released for users in Canada, New Zealand, Portugal, and Spain.

“The top brass at Netflix are somehow not aware that the only reason a lot of people use Netflix is that it is slightly easier than pirating,” added co-host Nick Mason. “As soon as it isn’t, people will stop using it.”

Gone are the days when Netflix was proud of its password sharing users. The company once encouraged the practice and even called it good marketing back in 2016. However, they have now shifted their tone and are determined to push ahead with stricter rules and additional fees for users who share their accounts with those outside their household.

“If they roll this out, I hope this kills Netflix,” said Clement. “Just as a lesson to everybody.”
